Comprehension
Comprehension is one of the most important skills students can acquire. Comprehension From the Ground Up defines comprehension as "the student understanding and making meaning about what they are reading." In order for students to be able to understand the text they read, they must be able to: decode what they read, make connections between what they read and their background knowledge, and think deeply about what they have read. Reading Rockets states, "comprehension involves combining reading with thinking and reasoning." For more information visit:

Activity 1: Roll & Retell
For this activity, teachers will divide students into groups of 3-4 and pass out 1 die per group. Students will take turns rolling the die and answering the questions on the roll and retell sheet. The teacher can decide if the students will use their own independent reading books to answer the questions, or if the students will be read a read-aloud book to answer the questions. Using students independent reading books could be a fun way for students to discover new books they may be interested in, but using read aloud books would allow students to work together to come up with the answers.
This activity supports comprehension by making students recall important details about the text they have read. As stated before, the students can use their independent reading books, or the teacher can do a read-aloud which ties into the current unit.

Activity 2: Read & Recall
For this activity, the teacher will read a book aloud to the students. The students will then get into partners, to complete the Read & Recall sheet. The sheet ties in different aspects of comprehension, which will help students grow in their ability to comprehend text.
This activity will promote comprehension, because it will help students focus on different important details within the story they read. The read aloud book could be chosen to match the current unit.
