Subitizing
The ability to instantly know how many there is of something without counting.
Dot Cards
Dot cards are a great way to assess students ability to subitize. Begin by telling students you are going to show them a card with dots on it. Inform them that you want them to count the number of dots on the card. Show them the card for three seconds, and tell the students to write down what number they saw. After a minute, give students a second look at the card. When finished, discuss students answers and how they saw the dots. This will help you gather an informal assessment of your students knowledge of subitizing.
