Fluency
Fluency is the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and expression. Students must be able to read fluently to comprehend what they have read. According to Phonics They Use, if students spend too much time on decoding the words they are reading, they will be unable to focus on the comprehension aspect (Cunningham, 2017). Fluent readers use phrasing, expression, and pay attention to punctuation when reading aloud and to themselves. To help students with fluency, Reading Rockets suggest teachers have students read a passage with a specific emotion, such as happy or scared.

Activity 1: Fluency Tic-Tac-Toe
For this activity, the teacher will have the students partner up and give each group one Fluency Tic-Tac-Toe board. The students will also need game markers, a short passage to read, and a timer for the game. The first student will select a space on the board by putting a game marker on it. When the other student starts the timer, the student will then read the short passage the way the game board indicates. The timer should be set for 2 minutes. The students will take turns placing their markers on the game board and reading the passage, until one student gets three markers in a row.
This activity supports fluency learning, buy having students read with expression and practicing automaticity. These are two components which make up fluency. The teacher can choose a passage based on the current unit or a frequent read aloud book, so the children are familiar with the text.

Activity 2: The Very Smart Caterpillar
For this activity, teachers will put students in groups of 3-5. Students will receive one game board and die per group. Students will also receive game pieces and record sheets for each member of the group. The students will take turns moving the number of spaces they roll on their die. When they land on a word, they will say it and spell it out loud. They will then write it on their record sheet. If a player lands on a fruit with a hole, they will lose a turn for the next round. The first player to reach the butterfly is the winner.
This activity supports fluency, by encouraging accuracy of high frequency words. Students who accurately read words, are able to better comprehend the passages they read. The game can be modified to use sight words, spelling words, or frequently missed words as the teacher sees necessary.
